Oran Park Leisure Centre
The Oran Park Leisure Centre is a significant new aquatic, indoor sports and fitness center created for a rapidy growing area in southwestern Sydney. Designed by Warren and Mahoney with TTW, this is the second successful timber-roofed aquatic centre collaboration between them after the success of Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Victoria.
The roof structure uses glue-laminated timber (GLT) columns and long-span GLT beams made from sustainable European spruce. The spruce is joined with custom steel connections that are installed in the factory reducing the amount of on-site labour required. The steel connections are covered with a timber plug to protect the joint from the humid and chlorinated environment of the pool hall. A durable water based, no-VOC, three-layer coating system is used to protect the timber and minimise the need for refinishing.
Prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels provide bracing for the structure and lightweight ETFE ‘pillow’ skylights, a more sustainable and transparent alternative to glass, are suspended between the structural grid.
Rubner, in partnership with Theca Timber, was contracted to implement the for-tender-design, and transform it into a full LOD300 model For Construction, produce then an LOD400 model For Manufacturing, shop drawings, transport drawings, installation sequencing, and finally manufacture and ship to site within a tight timeframe.
“The Oran Park Leisure Centre is a testament to the vision we have for Camden - to provide world-class facilities right here in our community. This centre will not only cater to our growing population but also inspire the next generation of athletes and active families. We are incredibly proud to bring such a comprehensive facility to the Macarthur region”. Camden Council General Manager Andrew Carfield.

The sustainable European glue-laminated (GLT) beams easily span the 50m pool and concourse.
The double column / beam arrangement works allows for narrower timber elements with less timber used overall.
The ETFE ‘pillow’ skylight span between the structural bays.
